The person behind the work

About

Sheeler Zhu / Film Practice

A high school student developing my filmmaking practice.

Short biography

Sheeler Zhu is an emerging filmmaker and visual storyteller from Zhejiang, China. His interest in cinema began at an early age and gradually developed from performance and photography into directing, writing, and independent filmmaking. While still in high school, he founded a student film society, and led collaborative productions with young creators. His recent work includes Upon the River O, an independently produced short film that explores the relationship between individuals and place. Alongside filmmaking, Sheeler is interested in contemporary culture, travel, and language.

Filmmaking interests

I am especially drawn to stories in which personal experience intersects with larger cultural or historical contexts. My influences range from European art cinema and modern Asian filmmaking to theatre, photography, and contemporary visual culture. I am particularly interested in fragmented narratives, ambiguous characters, urban spaces, cultural displacement, and the tension between reality and subjective perception.

Creative practice

I usually begin with an image, atmosphere, question, or personal observation rather than a fully developed story. From there, I develop the work through research, writing, conversations, location scouting, visual references, and improvisation with collaborators.I am interested in both the conceptual and practical sides of filmmaking: developing ideas, directing actors, designing visual language, working with sound, and shaping rhythm through editing. I also value the collaborative nature of cinema and see filmmaking as a process of discovery rather than simply executing a predetermined plan.
